How to avoid being scammed by a locksmith

After 30 years of repairing the damage rogue locksmiths leave behind, here is what David wants every homeowner to know before they call anyone, including us.

Before you call

  • Skip the Sponsored adverts. Choosing the adverts at the very top of Google is often a mistake. Scroll to the map results and reviews.
  • Check the address. A genuine local business shows the street address it trades from, not just “serving Loughton”.
  • Check the phone number. Local landlines start 020 8508 or 020 8502 in Loughton. An 0800 or mobile number on its own is a warning sign.
  • Check Companies House. A limited company must show its registration number. Look it up free on the Companies House website.
  • Check the reviews. Read reviews on Google and Trustpilot, and look for ones that mention the locksmith by name.
  • Check the MLA. Master Locksmiths Association members are vetted and inspected. Search the MLA website.

Red flags on the doorstep

  • Vague answers about who they are or where they are based
  • Reaching for the drill straight away on a standard lock
  • An unmarked vehicle and no ID
  • No company name or address on any paperwork

What rogue work looks like

Customers often call us after a “locksmith” has drilled through a perfectly pickable lock, fitted the wrong size cylinder so it sticks out and can be snapped, packed hinges with cardboard, or left a door that won’t close properly. Putting a bodge right is always more work than doing the job properly the first time.

Common questions

How do I know if a locksmith is genuine?

Look for a full street address, a local landline, a Companies House number and membership of the Master Locksmiths Association. Check reviews on Google and Trustpilot.

Why are the top Google results for locksmiths often call centres?

The top results marked Sponsored are paid adverts. Some are run by national lead-generation companies that sell your job on to whoever is available.

What is a locksmith bodge?

Poor or unnecessary work, such as drilling a lock that could have been easily picked, fitting the wrong size lock, or damaging the door. We regularly repair work left by untrained callers.
